License for First Tribal Casino on Las Vegas Strip Corridor Gets Official Approval

Mohegan partnered with Virgin Hotels, the land owner, for its first foray on the Vegas strip resort corridor.

Mohegan is set to become the first Tribe to operate a casino in Las Vegas, since Nevada legalized gaming in 1931. The Tribal gaming arm officially received approval on Thursday from the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) to open Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin Hotels. The new 60,000-square-foot attraction, also known as Mohegan Sun Casino Las Vegas, is on the former Hard Rock Las Vegas grounds.

This isn’t the first barrier Mohegan Gaming has broken for Indian Country. Mohegan was the first Tribe to operate in Atlantic City, and among the first to develop internationally — in South Korea and Canada. Now Mohegan will add Greece to that list with the forthcoming INSPIRE Athens integrated resort.

“By pioneering this new pathway in the most well-known gaming market in the world, we are extending our growing reach with yet another legendary global gaming capital continuing the Mohegan Tribe tradition of blazing new trails for others to follow. We cannot be more thrilled or honored to be able to expand and call Nevada a home away from home,” said Mohegan Tribal Chairman James Gessner.

The master developer and operator of global resorts isn’t slowing down amid a pandemic. MGE did take measures to survive its closures. MGE accessed some liquidity through its senior revolver and renegotiated some of its debt under new terms. Its flagship property, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, reopened June 1st, two and half months after locking their doors on March 17th. But its two properties in Niagara Falls, Ontario, remain closed.

“As almost every company in our industry had to face, we were required to go back to our banks and amend our credit agreements with respect to the closures,” MGE CEO Mario Kontomerkos told Gambling Compliance.

MGE Diversifying Heavily Into Digital Gaming

While MGE’s geographical footprint keeps getting larger, the company is heavily diversifying into digital gaming. “We are currently involved in digital gaming and when we say digital gaming that is social gaming, sports betting and online gaming in five jurisdictions,” Kontomerkos told Gambling Compliance. MGE made the decision years ago to invest in its own digital gaming platform development, “which can support many gaming products in the future, in many jurisdictions.”

In December 2019, Mohegan Sun Pocono expanded its retail sportsbook, Unibet Sportsbook at Mohegan Sun Pocono, by launching online sports betting across Pennsylvania, accessible on mobile apps found at and on its website

Mohegan’s expanded digital gaming platform will allow the company “to penetrate this growing industry,” Kontomerkos said.
