Mohegan Sun Targets Consumer and B2B Tradeshows With New $80M Earth Expo & Convention Center

Roughly 80,000 people descended on the Mohegan Sun property June 20-23 specifically to attend the inaugural event hosted at the new Earth Expo & Convention Center in Uncasville, Connecticut. Collector cars were parked throughout the column-free space for the Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction.

The Earth Expo spans the size of four football fields — ideal for housing Barrett-Jackson’s classic cars. The auction company sold 662 automobiles during the four-day event. Live, worldwide TV coverage of the auction at Mohegan Sun was broadcast on Discovery Channel and Velocity.

Mohegan Sun has inked a five-year agreement to host one of Barrett-Jackson’s four, large-scale events annually. Mohegan Sun is leveraging the appeal of the Earth Expo & Convention Center’s contiguous space to establish long-term partnerships with clients like Barrett-Jackson, who require a large footprint and loading dock accessibility for tradeshows. Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors allow for natural light to filter through, offering an ideal showroom. It’s also the largest expo space along the New York-Boston I-95 corridor.

“Boat shows, RV shows, home and garden shows—with those big tradeshows, comes load in and load out needs,” said John Washko, vice president of exhibitions and convention sales at Mohegan Sun. “Energy and machine parts organizations, transportation entities and automotive companies—all of those segments and organizations are looking to have the Mohegan Sun and the Earth Expo & Convention Center as their home for many years to come.”

The Earth Expo & Convention Center has secured deals with United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI), the National Association of Postal Supervisors and the Connecticut Marine Trades Association, among other corporations and organizations.

To fill the expo and convention center consistently, Mohegan Sun is striking a balance between weekend and mid-week reservations for corporate and association tradeshows. “We pivot from the consumer groups—that don’t have large [hotel] room blocks but are driving foot traffic into our entertainment complex” to business conventions involving overnight stays, Washko said. “We’re focused on consumer show segments on the weekends and our business-to-business (B2B) shows during the week.”

The Earth Expo & Convention Center features ballroom space for receptions and dining, 15 meeting rooms for breakout sessions, an executive boardroom, and all the amenities.

Highlights of the new Earth Expo & Convention Center at Mohegan Sun include:

  • 20,000 square-foot Ballroom, divisible into two and featuring over 3,000 square feet of pre-function space
  • Free parking, eight bay loading dock from an open parking field and additional drive in access from two, grade-level drive-in doors
  • 15 meeting rooms total, ranging from 360 square-feet to 675 square feet
  • A 1,263 square-foot Executive Boardroom with 230 square feet of pre-function space and a private outdoor terrace
  • 3,500 square feet of outdoor space including a large wrap-around terrace
  • A 5,360 square foot kitchen
  • State-of-the-art technology with cutting edge audio & visual capabilities, digital and free wi-fi

Come winter, Mohegan will add bowling, ping-pong, karaoke, craft beer and food options, private event space and more through GAME ON!, owned by the Lyons Group, located within the Earth Expo & Convention Center.
