Presidential Race Hangs in Balance, Social Media Platforms Fact-Check Trump

Thus far, Biden has secured 238 electoral votes, and Trump, 213. Both candidates still have pathways to garner the 270 electoral college votes necessary to win the presidency. (

While President Trump prematurely declared victory early Wednesday, votes continue to be counted in several battleground states. Final results could be delayed for days.

Social media platforms have been tasked with the burden of fact-checking misleading information.

Trump asserted, “We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election,” which Twitter quickly marked as “disputed” and “misleading.” Meanwhile, Facebook has reminded viewers that “final results may be different from initial vote counts.”

Fox News’ Chris Wallace responded live, “This is an extremely flammable situation. The president just threw a match into it. He hasn’t won these states.”

The New York Times’ Mark Landler called Trump’s claims a “reckless attack on the democratic process during a time of deep anxiety and division in the country.”

“It’s not my place or Donald Trump’s place to declare who has won this election,” Biden said. “That’s the decision of the American people.”

Trump said he would petition the Supreme Court to halt the counting of votes past Election Day, calling it “a major fraud on our nation. We want the law to be used in a proper manner,” Trump said. “We’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop.”

The presidential election now hangs on the outcome of votes in key states. Biden currently holds a narrow lead in Arizona, Nevada, Michigan and Wisconsin, with Trump leading in Georgia and North Carolina.

Biden is optimistic. While more than 100 million Americans voted prior to Election Day, more Biden supporters cast votes by mail that are still being counted. “We believe we’re on track to win this election,” Biden said. “It ain’t over ’til every vote is counted.”
